Birch Round Logs

Birch Round Logs trees, belonging to the genus Betula in the family Betulaceae, are broadleaved deciduous hardwoods closely related to alders, hazels, and hornbeams. These trees are typically small to medium-sized and thrive in temperate climates. The distinctive bark of birch trees features long, horizontal lenticels and often separates into thin, papery plates, especially on the paper birch. The bark is resistant to decay due to the resinous oil it contains. The varying colors of birch bark—gray, white, black, silver, and yellow—lend different species their common names. Birch Round Logs

Characteristics of Birch Wood Birch Round Logs

Birch wood is prized for several reasons:

  1. Grain and Texture: Birch wood is fine-grained and pale, often exhibiting an attractive satin-like sheen. The close-grained wood can take a fine polish, enhancing its appeal for various applications. Ripple figuring may also occur, increasing the timber’s value for veneer and furniture making. 2. Plywood: Birch plywood, made from laminations of birch veneer, is renowned for its strength and dimensional stability, though it is unsuitable for exterior use. It is light yet strong and has various applications, including the manufacture of longboards (skateboards) and model aircraft, often using very thin grades with many laminations.
  3. Fuel Value: The wood has a fair fuel value, making it a viable option for heating and energy production.
  4. Paper Production: Birch wood pulp provides relatively long and slender fibers for a hardwood. The thin walls of the fibers cause them to collapse upon drying, resulting in paper with low bulk and opacity. However, the fibers are easily fibrillated, offering about 75% of the tensile strength of softwood. The low opacity makes birch fibers suitable for producing glassine.
